Shell Lake
Todd & Nic Bertoia invited us up to their cabin at Big Shell Resort to spend a few days with them before the Bertoia Family Reunion. The cabin is beatiful, set back 100 metres from the lake. While Gena & Bluey would have a 'few' catch up drinks with Tod and Nic, Brandt, Jackson, Bailey and I would be out on the canoe fishing, or casting off the dock.
On the first day there, the first thing Bailey and I wanted to do was go out on the boat and ride the tubes. Todd and Nic had the Taj Mahal of all tubes, a 7-manner along with their 2 man flat tube. We spent no less then 3 hours out there, Bluey even made an appearance on both tubes!
That night, after we had gone fishing, we mucked about at the cabin. It was nice and calm on the water so we decided we should go knee-boarding. 20 minutes into it though, we had to leave because a big electrical storm started.
The next day was less exciting, it rained most of the day so we went into town and played a couple of rounds of mini-golf. Todd looked like Happy Gilmore, playing in an old Hockey jersey (and looking at the scores, he may have putted like him too). That night we had a feed of fish, Brandt and I eating one of the fish we had caught earlier in the day. We then played ladder golf (Nic & Gena were ridiculously competitive), ate S'mores, and laughed at Bluey and Todd trying to play 'Just Dance' to finish the night.
Gena & Bluey were going home the next day while Bailey & I stayed at the lake. That morning, before they left, Brandt, Bailey and I went out fishing on the canoe, and while we were about 100 metres from shore, we tipped the canoe, had to swim it back to shore, fully clothed. Not much fun. The day turned out turned out alright though since we got a whole day of knee-boarding in.
After 4 days at Big Shell, we were finished and off to the Bertoia Family Reunion for our last weekend with the Bertoia's.

Farmer Bluey, the Family Wedding, the Haircut and Horse Riding
For the last 3 or 4 days, Bluey has been educated in Basic Farming 101. Kim & Rhonda have a couple of Quarters that had been sown for grass that they are changing over to crops (each quarter is 160 acres). To enable it to be prepared for crops, there is a lot of work to be done. The first stage is to disc up the field. That involves driving around and around the field, at 3mph with discs on the back of the tractor turning up the ground. To give you an idea of how riveting this process is - it took around 30 hours to disc one quarter - once. It now needs to be cross cut a second time, before being cultivated so that it is ready for seeding next spring. Thankfully there is a lot of snow cover in the meantime to slow down weed growth. The good news is that the discs get lifted slightly for the second disc run meaning the tractor can now be cranked up to a speedy 5mph. Believe it or not, that will make a massive difference.
On Saturday evening, we were invited to a Wedding Dance at nearby Cut Knife. It was the wedding of the son of Kim's cousin, Larry. I must say, it was the first time we have ever gone to a wedding, only knowing about 2% of the guests, but as you may be able to imagine, by the time the wedding dance was over, we had met more like 90% of the people.
We got home from the wedding at around 3am but by the time we had skyped Adam, H and the kids back in Australia, had a couple more drinks and chatted a bit more, it was 5.30am with the sun well and truly up. Of course Kim sees this and states - 'The sun is up, start of the work day' and jumps on the quad bike and heads out to the field to continue discing. Bluey went to bed with a plan to be up at 9.00am to take over from Kim on the tractor - he managed to get out to the field by 10.00am.
Riley decided that 3.30am that it would be a good time for a haircut (he got no arguments as his hair was out of control) and Kim & Taylor decided they would be the Barber's - with the following result.
Believe it not - everyone agreed that this was actually an improvement. The following day, Gena took Riley and Bailey over to Brayden's mum & dad's (Bonita & Lorne's) place to catch up and to also do something with this head. A definite improvement but still a rude head.
Okay, we are off to Shell Lake for a few days to warm up for the Bertoia Family reunion, so we won't be posting for a couple of days. Have a great 40th Birthday party Cheridee, we will be having a couple for you.

Keep in mind, that is only half of the hair
Riley decided to keep a short mohawk
Whilst at Lorne & Bonita's the boys were taken out for a ride on their horses. Riley & Bailey only rode for about an hour and have not stopped whining about their sore butts since. I guess Bailey does have some sort of reason to complain? I am pretty sure that the boys have now covered off every mode of transport possible and we are only half way through our trip?

Jasper National Park
Kristine and Caleb made the trip to Edmonton from Lloydminster (approx 2.5 hours) where Caleb joined Riley & Bailey in the water park inside West Edmonton Mall for the day. Playing the dumb Aussie tourist, Bluey managed to get Caleb in for free as well (Gena was proud). As the boys ran from water slide to water slide, only resting to go into the wave pool every half hour, Kristine showed Bluey & Gena around the massive mall. What was to follow was great news for all 4 intrepid travellers. Krissy was taking Riley & Bailey back to Lloydminster for a few days, whilst Gena & Bluey were going to Jasper NP. I am not sure who was happier, but after living in each others pockets for nearly 2 months, it was to be a welcome time apart. Around 6.00pm, the boys were on there way, whilst Gena & Bluey stayed on in Edmonton for another night.
After a good nights sleep, Gena & Bluey set off on the 4 hour drive to Jasper. As they had borrowed camping gear off Kim & Rhonda, it was just a matter of finding a camp ground and setting up camp - or was it? Finding a camp ground was certainly not a problem, but the infestation of mosquitoes that Jasper was experiencing was another matter all together. To call this place the mosquito capital of the world would not be out of place at the moment. As we were setting up the tent, they were almost carrying Gena & Bluey away. Therefore, everything was done super fast and when finished it was a matter of locking yourself in the tent and start killing all of those that made their way in. From this point a plan was hatched. Part 1 - When going from the car to the tent, synchronize, get out of the car together, run to the tent, close it and kill all of the mosquitoes. Part 2 - Spend as little amount of time at camp as possible. Part 3 - When going to the shower block, take off at the same time and run hard. On return dive into the car until run into tent can be synchronised. Part 5 - Spend as little amount of time at camp as possible. Part 6 - When there is no chance of doing anything at camp, find a Pub and go for a drink.
Did I mention that Gena and Bluey spent 5 hours at the Whistle Stop Pub on that first evening, therefore if the mosquitoes were silly enough to bite them, they wouldn't be able to fly straight afterwards.
Day 2 started well, mosquities not as bad as the previous night (after it had rained all night long) and we set about doing the activities that our Slovakian bartender had suggested to us the night before. We headed up to Maligne Canyon, which made the whole trip to Jasper worthwhile. Photos will be added, but unfortunately the video that was taken cannot be added just to show the pure ferocity and power of the water travelling through the canyon.
The drive from Maligne Canyon took us up to Medicine Lake and then on to Maligne Canyon. The drive was spectacular and I will show you some of the wildlife as well as the amazing scenery along the way - almost postcard worthy.

Naturally, after a busy day of travelling and then returning to mosquito central, we had no choice but to shower up and head back to the Whistle Stop.
Packing up the tent was a pleasure as well today. I swear I was getting lifted up and carried at times. Then there was the 6.5 hour drive back to pick the boys up and then return back to Baldwinton for a bit of a rest before our next adventure. I think we have a wedding to attend on Saturday night - I hope they are ready for Bluey's moves on the dance floor?

West Edmonton Mall
Today we left Bentley, after a couple of nights with Holly - who was a wonderful host. Today's destination was Edmonton, home of the one of the worlds largest malls and certainly North America's largest - the West Edmonton Mall. It is so big they built a huge water-park and amusement-park in there!
We arrived at about 3:00pm after a 2 hour drive, and in the 3 hours before the shops closed, we only saw about 1/4 of the mall, going into about every 10th - there is over 800 stores in the mall! Once the shops closed, we went up to the third floor where we saw 'The Amazing Spider-Man' in the huge Imax theatre.
Tomorrow we are planning to rise early and get the most out of the day at the mall, once finished shopping we believe we will spend the rest of the day at the Water Park - along with Caleb and Tylan Bertoia, our new Canadian mates.
Apart from that we will keep trying to have updates as often as possible!

Calgary Stampede
We are on the road again. We left Baldwinton, SK to take in a couple of days at the Calgary Stampede. This is not your every day Stampede as it is the 100th Anniversary of 'The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth'.
As you could imagine, accommodation in Calgary was all gone weeks ago, so Kim made a call to his cousin, Bradley and his wife Stacy in Airdrie, AB (about 30 minutes from Calgary) and the conversation went a bit like this - "Hey Stacy, it's Kim, I have a couple of Aussies here with me that are heading down to Calgary for a few days, is it okay if they come and crash with you guys for a couple of nights?" Firstly, Kim didn't mention that it was a husband & wife, and that they also had 2 kids coming with them. Still, Stacy didn't hesitate in telling him that it was okay.
We made a slight detour on the way to Airdrie to a town called Drumheller, Alberta which is home to the best Badlands scenery in Canada, the world-famous Royal Tyrrell Museum, and the richest deposits of fossils and dinosaur bones in North America. We went straight to the Tyrrell Museum and spent the next 2.5 hours in awe at the collection of Dinosaurs on display as well as the stories behind each exhibit. It covered off so many different dinosaur eras, it was unbelievable. Jesse, you would have been in heaven.
From Drumheller, we took the relatively short journey on to Airdrie. Imagine Stacy's surprise when the four of us rocked up at her place. She later told us it was a relief, as she was expecting a couple of Aussie party boys to be turning up. So, we got to meet Stacy, Brad and their 2 young boys, Nolan 5 & Justin 3 (pocket dynamos). We were to have a great 3 days with them, and our family has now grown further.
Our first day at the Stampede was very hot - it was about 36C with not much breeze. Therefore Gena and Bluey spent a lot of the day at the indoor activities and displays. As for Riley and Bailey, they got sorted with all day and express passes for the many rides at the midway and went on to spend hour after hour on the rides. They would only come back to re-fuel. There were quite a few highlights throughout the day but by far everyone's favorite thing for the day was the Corral Show, called 'Tails' which a one one hour spectacular describing the 'legend' of how the very first Stampede came to fruition 100 years ago. It was a riveting display of Indian dancing, horse and riding acrobatics, with a well set out story line to go with it.
Close to equaling this show was the performance of the brilliant band 'Recycled Percussion' (who shot to fame on last season's America's Got Talent' series). WOW. Talk about entertainment. In fact, anyone reading this, google them and take a look - you will not be disappointed. They were that good, we actually watched them twice. In between these performances, we got to see a great act from Australia. 'Adam & Selina - Illusionists' also shot to fame on 'Australia's Got Talent' and their show was also brilliant. 13 hours after arriving at the Stampede, we were watching the fireworks that brought about the conclusion of the day. We arrived back at Brad & Stacy's at about 12.30am and by the time we all showered up and chatted with Stacy, we were going to bed at 2.00am.
We had intended for a really early start on day 2, but after the late finish, it was never going to happen. We got to the Stampede at around 11.00am. Bluey went straight to the ticket office to try to get tickets for the days Rodeo at 1.15pm. Gena went to our favorite stage and watched an Indian Ceremonial performance and a Trampoline Performance. Riley and Bailey went to their favorite stand - the Sony PlayStation stand. They were having a daily competition involving a Home Run Derby. Throughout the first 10 days of the Stampede, the record was set at 13 home runs, but if you got 5, you received a pair of PS sunglasses. Both boys hit double figures on their first attempt but also missed the record. A PS t-shirt was on offer for any new records. Riley then had a second attempt, again reaching double figures, but again missing the record. Bailey, on his second attempt was set to blow the stand operators away. He didn't just beat the record - he obliterated it, with an astonishing 25 home runs. They had Bailey stand in front of the massive screen and took photos of him with his record score.
Bluey manged to get Rush seats for the Rodeo and by the time he found everyone, it was time to make our way to the Grandstand for the show. The rodeo was sensational - highlighted by an Aussie winning the second event we watched. What these Cowboys could do on these fired up animals was simply amazing - and with around $2M dollars up for grabs, you can only imagine the intensity. There is a 3 hour session daily at the stampede and was well worth the 1 hour wait that Bluey had to endure to secure tickets.
In the late afternoon, we all went to watch a Hypnotist - Terry Stokes. For anyone that hasn't been to one of these shows - do so, it is hilarious. The stuff he had these people doing was amazing and side splitting funny.
We had no intention of putting in another 13 hour day, so we headed back to Airdrie at around 6.30pm. We had another great night (our last) with Brad, Stacy & boys before heading for Bentley today for a couple of days with Kim's sister, Holly, who we met in Australia in 2010.

Saskatchewan Roughriders
I'm not sure how many people have travelled 5 hours to a football game, sit there for 3 hours and then spend 5 hours travelling home again - well, that is exactly what we did yesterday.
We jumped on a chartered bus in Cut Knife - there was 21 of us and took the trip across to Regina to watch the Saskatchewan Roughriders take on the Edmonton Eskimos in the Roughriders home opener for 2012.
It was a pretty excited group that hopped on the bus with Esky's full, decked out in Roughrider green (except for Dave & Gage who were our token Eskimos). The ladies painted everyones faces or planted them with stickers. The 5 hour bus ride brought a few undone - it is fair to say that Kim was a bit vocal leading up to the start of the game. It is also the first time I have ever been to a game to witness a patron being carried out at the 5 minute mark of the first quarter - but the guy sitting about 6 rows in front of us couldn't even walk. As for Kim, we didn't see him after half time although somehow he didn't get himself kicked out, he actually managed to find his way down and sat right behind the Roughriders bench?
As for the game itself, it has quite a few different rules from American Gridiron but was easy enough to pick up. Unfortunately it was a very defensive game and didn't really get exciting until about 2 minutes to go. The Roughriders holding on for a dour 17-1 victory to start their season 2-0.

Atton's Lake
This week we are spending time at the family cabin at Atton's Lake. It is about a 40 minute drive from Kim & Rhonda's. Kim lent Bluey his F-350 and his boat and we set off for the week (although we have come back tonight to catch up with Kim's brother and his family).
The weather on day 1 was a bit ordinary, so we didn't take the boat out but as it fined up in the evening, we decided to take a walk down to the golf club for a look. Here we ran into other friend's of Kim & Rhonda that we have met since we got here. They were about to head out for a round of golf, and asked us to join them - so we did. Bailey played with the left handers, Heath, Mia, Hayden and Gage in the first group and Riley and I played in the right handers group with Dave, Nicole and Omily. the course was not too dissimilar from Royal Churchill so we felt right at home.
After the golf, Gena had met up some old friends from when she was here 21 years ago. Lorne & Bonita and their kids Brayden & Mac. For those who met him, Brayden spent a few weeks living with us on a couple of occasions last year. We ended up back at their cabin for a quick drink and ended up getting home at 3am.
It is fair to say Gena pulled up a bit second hand on day 2 - in fact she wasn't much use to anyone till about 3pm. The weather was pretty average anyway, so a big family card game got underway. Not sure if anyone in Australia has played Rummoli before but we will certainly be introducing it to all our friends when we get home.
Today, the weather was superb. We were up early and had the boat on the lake by 10am. We were the only boat on the lake and the water was flat - until Bluey cranked up the throttle with Riley & Bailey hanging off the back on the tube. Bluey was taking pleasure in dumping the boys repeatedly as they bounced across the wake as he snaked about the lake.`

Gopher Hunting
For my birthday we decided that we should go Gopher Hunting with Kim's .22's and his old mate Bob's 2 rifles. It was a 30 minute drive to the hunting area, the whole trip Bailey, Tylan, Caleb and I riding in the tray of the pick-up. When we made it to the field, it was swarming with Gophers, literally hundreds of them! The adults told us that we would shoot until we got bored or until we ran out of ammunition (about 1250 bullets). Five hours later, we were out of ammunition and shot no less then 3-400 gophers. Old Bob reckoned the farmer whose land we were on would be very happy with our days work.
Once this was done we went back, had steaks for dinner, went for a ride on the quads, and lastly, Rhonda brought me an ice-cream cake decorated with Canadian maple leafs. It looked great and tasted even better. Overall I'd have to say, it's not a birthday I'm gonna be forgetting any time soon!
Sorry to everyone for being inactive lately, it has been flat since we arrived here, so many cool things to do and people to meet. Also thankyou to everyone that wished me a happy birthday (:
